The British Columbia Coast – Part I: Storm Bound
The region where I live and photograph is called the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast. With the overarching goal of my book publications being to generate a sense of place for the entire region, the ocean called.
Unlike the mountains, I had never been attracted to oceans; however, I have several friends who have graciously given me access to the British Columbia coast. The experience below was with Tom Ellison of Ocean Light II Adventures. It was a trip I have never forgotten!
I have little experience at sea, however, ominous cloud formations above a relatively dark calm ocean was a ‘beware’ sign to me.
Eventually the calmness gave way to whitecaps and gale force winds. It was time to get the camera out!
The storm hit as we entered Queen Charlotte Sound. For our captain, this was no surprise, really. These northern waters are among the most challenging in the world.
Photographing was a challenge, and looking through a lens was nauseous.
I endeavoured to capture the essence of the storm and our sailing experience.
Eventually, we made it through the storm. These experiences are powerful reminders as to our vulnerability on planet earth.
British Columbia Coast: Part II – next week!
