VN #045: Bowron River Marsh – Part I
Posted October 13, 2024
Bowron River Marsh. Part I
Within Bowron Lake Park, situated in central British Columbia, is a circuit of eleven lakes connected by portages and rivers. This roughly rectangular water system forms a completely enclosed 116km wilderness canoe circuit that is unique to our planet. No other canoe circuit combines the beautiful rivers, spectacular mountain scenery, placid lakes, and varied wildlife of the Bowron Lake route. It is considered one of the top ten canoe trips in the world.
I first canoed the circuit in 1969, the year I came to BC. I fell in love with the place, and later, as a tour guide, led over 100 canoe expeditions; sharing my passion for both the wilderness and the twin artistries of paddling and photography.
Within the circuit lies a marsh; my favourite marsh.
Three years ago, Rita and I paddled to the Bowron River marsh and camped nearby on the shore of Bowron River. Each morning at dawn, with camera equipment at the ready, I would paddle downstream and enter the marsh. It is a place of calmness, quietness, and serenity.
Entering the marsh
The clouds above were patterned beautifully; I couldn’t ask for a better start to the day!

I’ve always dreamt of living by this marsh twelve months of the year; experiencing the seasons, the daily weather patterns, the vegetational change, and the comings and goings of bird and wildlife.

Double reflection
Next week, I’ll share some wildlife imagery made in the marsh.
