Small People in Large Landscapes

Hi everyone.

I thought I would change up the subject this week from my series of Aerial Perspective images to sharing another of my favourite topics; Small People in Large Landscapes. I started this series in VN #066, March 9, 2025.

When I began my life of adventure in the unbelievably spectacular mountains of British Columbia, I quickly realized the insignificance of our human journey compared to the 4.5-billion-year journey of the land on which I was canoeing, hiking, or climbing. I always felt small and in awe; the magnitude of the landscape and its staggering beauty was always overpowering and irresistible.

In order to market my adventure tours, I would always show people in the places where I guided. It planted the idea that these places were recreationally accessible for people to experience. All they had to do was sign up on one of my trips!

The idea worked, and a 35-year career in guiding wilderness adventures was established.

Fifty years later, I still photograph small unrecognizable people in vast spectacular settings. I find it inviting.

High in the Niut Mountains, we contemplated the remnant glacier that had created the valley we were in.

As the glaciers retreat, we explore the land where no humans have walked.

I enjoy the feeling of being small, seeking the immense beauty of the land.

How does a lone photographer capture the feelings of being where he happens to be?

With his horse and two dogs, a lone cowboy commutes slowly to work.

As temperatures climb, glaciers melt and retreat. With tiny cameras, we try to capture the magnatude of what is really happening.

Have a great week!
