VN #076: Devil’s Canyon
Published: June 15, 2025
Devil’s Canyon
There are many places in North America called Devil’s Canyon, but this canyon, tucked away out of sight high above the Fraser River Canyon, is like no other place I have ever seen.
Created over millions of years by heaving tectonic plates, continental drift, volcanic eruptions, several ice ages, and final sculpturing by the last 10-14 thousand years of post glacial erosion, Devil’s Canyon called to me. I knew I had to access it, explore it, and photograph it.
In 1993, I first looked down into this canyon while riding horseback; I was exploring the Fraser River Canyon above Big Bar. I remember saying to myself, ‘I have to hike into this mysterious place; I need to explore it with my camera’.
Several years later I entered the canyon for the first time and discovered extraordinary rock formations, colours, and textures. Below are a few examples.
Devil’s Canyon; an extraordinary place.
