VN #073: Orlebar Beach ~ Part I
Published: May 25, 2025
Message: Hi everyone. I’ve been away for a month, but I am now back from my photographic holiday which took me to the Badlands of southern Alberta. Visual Narratives will continue once again. Thanks for resuming your interest.
Orlebar Beach ~ Gabriola Island ~ Part I
Gabriola Island, one of the Gulf Islands off the west coast of mainland British Columbia, is also named the Isle of the Arts. Many working artists who live there have their own galleries, and along with festivals and other cultural events, Gabriola Island is a popular summer destination.
My photographic workshop teaching companion, Dennis Ducklow, introduced me to the island in 2019. Upon falling in love with the seaside landscape, I decided to take a 10-day self-directed arts residency there. Each day I immersed myself with artistic challenges; exploring photographic expression and the creative process.
One of my favourite spots along the shoreline was Orlebar Beach. Being a person of the mountains, I was captivated by how atmosphere conditions combined with unfamiliar tide changes led to continuous transformations in the landscape. Rocks and pool formations appeared and disappeared by the hour; the sea could appear rough or calm. Change became the emphasis of compositional study.
I visited this beach once a day; here are a few of my photographic expressions.
