Newsletter #149: December, 2017

Hi everyone,
This is a SPECIAL Newsletter
For those who have seen our most recent presentations based on my publication, The Cariboo Chilcotin Coast: A Photographer’s Journey, you are aware of my collaboration with platinum music producer Ken Marshall who composed the original music settings to each slide show.
Fast approaching
Ken and I are now working as Harris & Marshall Media. On December 1st our first two documentaries will be released on Vimeo for international distribution.
My photography is dedicated to bringing awareness and reverence to the value of nature, biodiversity, and beauty in my home region of British Columbia, the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast; and by extension, our home, planet Earth.
As a narrative photographer, along with my partner Rita Giesbrecht, I am so excited to be working with Ken to share stories which we feel are globally important.
Chilcotin Ark
Our first two documentaries, The Chilcotin Ark, and The Wildfire Season of 2017, have thought provoking implications on how we choose to live our lives on this planet; sustainably for all time, or governed by greed for a much shorter period of time.
Both documentaries are highly educational and are recommended viewing for all ages, especially the children and youth who will lead us into the future.
We hope that you will enthusiastically share this Newsletter with your friends. We sincerely appreciate your support for our work.

The Chilcotin Ark
“The Chilcotin Ark is a phenomenon that could be the most significant story of the 21st century.
Renowned Canadian narrative photographer Chris Harris takes us on a visual adventure into the heart of British Columbia, set to original music by platinum producer Ken ‘hiwatt’ Marshall.
In the last quarter of the 20th century there were those who saw the coming destruction of the unaltered landscape of British Columbia, and took steps to try and divert its course.
British Columbia’s Chilcotin Plateau is a land of legend, tragedy, and heroism. This is the story of a heroic effort by two individuals who fulfilled a dream; to preserve a contiguous, intact wilderness complex that would protect wildlife habitat, and provide a blueprint of diversity for future generations.
They foresaw the need for such a blueprint, decades before the phrases ‘climate change’ or ‘climate warming’ were in common usage.

Working in secret for at least 25 years, these individuals were able to negotiate their way to the creation of an area they dubbed ‘The Chilcotin Ark’; the largest intact wilderness in the temperate world.
This is the story of that landscape as it is today, and the potential it holds for the human family in the future.
This documentary features 4 mini-films from the Chris Harris Photographic Journey project; Coast Mountain Foothills, Spirit in the Grass, Shield Volcanoes, and Memories of Ice

The Wildfire Summer of 2017
“A personal story from renowned Canadian narrative photographer Chris Harris, as he shares his experience in the Cariboo Chilcotin during the most catastrophic fire season in British Columbian history. The story is accompanied by original music scores by platinum producer Ken “hiwatt” Marshall.
This is a human story.
The wildfire summer of 2017 was a summer of stories; it was huge, and it was indiscriminate in its reach. No one was left untouched.
Photographer and chronicler Chris Harris traversed the land he has known intimately for four decades, turning his lens to tell the stories of friends and loved ones.
A story of loss
When we step into an experience of change, renewal, and trauma, we can also find inspiration, courage, and art.
These are the stories that touched and moved one photographer and led him to regeneration and creativity, and through him, thousands of others.
He is joined by composer Ken Marshall in a collaboration that gives a unique and heartening perspective to an event that is almost always seen as disastrous.
Together, photographer and composer find beauty where it is least expected.”

Conclusion:
In my work, I put images into the world to tell stories about what is important and meaningful to me. I cannot compromise.
My hope as an artist is that my work finds an audience whose spirit resonates with mine.
Regeneration
If you are part of this audience, please share these stories which Ken has so beautifully amplified with his musical compositions, with your children, your families, and your friends.
Your support for this collaborative endeavor is immensely appreciated.

Chris: I viewed both trailers, and they are wonderful! My question is whether these are available on DVD? Could you let me know? Joan
Joan, CD’s and DVD’s seem to be a thing of the past. Most laptops now don’t even have a slot to insert them. So these documentaries are only available online. Thanks!
From a writer of books and newsletters, to a narrator of visual stories that are deeply personal to so many, you never fail to grab our emotions and hold us spellbound. How wonderful that we can all experience the summer of 2017 through your eyes, both the devastation and the hope. Thank you.
Thank you Dennis. I am happy to hear you so enjoyed them.
