Hi everyone,
This is the beginning of my 11th year of monthly Newsletters! How exciting is that!!
The past four weeks has been jam-packed with inspiration and creativity. During that time I have taught three 3-day photo workshops, and presented a talk on Narrative Photography at the Canadian Association of Photographic Art in Vancouver.
It has been so enriching, to reconnect with so many old outdoor adventure and photography friends dating back to trips shared over 20 years ago, as well as meeting so many new photographer friends.
Thank you all for your interest and continued support. Please enjoy my 121st consecutive monthly Newsletter!!
Our goal at the Chris Harris Gallery is to share the creative process. Please share this Newsletter with friends. I appreciate your support for my work.
Chris
1. Farwell Canyon: preparing for a workshop
Last month I went out to Farwell Canyon to make a few images while formulating a shooting plan for my upcoming photo workshops. I bring the group here for a field trip, so I was planning where to shoot, at what time of the day, depending on the light.
Notes on composition: Line, form, texture, and colour contrast were the main compositional elements which I set out to arrange in a pleasing way that provided me with a sense of balance. I planned this area as part of the afternoon shoot. |
Notes on composition & technique: Being aware of the various lines of colour contrast, I set out to make this abstract. I used camera movement at 1/10sec. I planned this area as part of our morning shoot; the time of day would depend on the light. |
2. Workshop Images: proud to show participants’ work
Here are some of the images made by various workshop participants, submitted for critiquing on the final day. Taking all the images from the three workshops, I randomly selected 28 images, based mostly on diversity of subject, vision, and creative technique. I did not look at who made the images.
In the workshop format, most images are not processed for the critique session. We were most interested in vision, composition, and creative use of the tools at hand. Because of this, I took the liberty of doing some basic processing and resizing of each image. Enjoy, this is a celebration of vision; an interpretation of what we all saw around us during a moment in time.
I will show 14 more next month.
3. Heading to the Rainbow Volcano: to shoot a promotional video
In a few days, Rita and I, along with friends Mike Duffy, and videographer Mike Bernard will join Leslie Witt of Rainbow Mountain Outfitters to travel by horse and by foot into the volcanic Rainbow Mountains.
Leslie will be our guide and trip leader

We will be shooting video and stills as part of a multi-functional promotional video. The volcanic beauty of the Rainbow Mountains will form the backdrop for hikers and the historical pack train of horses. I can’t wait for the trip to begin!
4. Staying at Eagle’s Nest Resort: yippee!
On our way to the Rainbow Mountain adventure, we will overnight at Eagle’s Nest Resort. This is an accommodation gem in the west Chilcotin wilderness where hospitality and delicious food awaits.
I photographed this exquisite resort several weeks ago (Newsletter #120), but this time I will be here for a business meeting. It will also be the last time we enjoy the comforts of a real bed before we head out to the mountains with tent and sleeping bags!
Here are two images I made on my last visit. I think you will understand why I am excited to be returning there!!
view from resort over Anahim Lake at 5:05am
Notes on composition: I placed the wharf in the centre of the composition, using the boats on the right to balance with the rising sun on the left of the wharf. I lifted one canoe up onto the wharf making a small implied triangle. I aimed it toward the sunrise. |
Eagle’s Nest Resort at 5:50am
Notes on composition & technique: Here I placed the wharf and canoes left of centre to balance with the resort on the right. The bright spot in the cloud above the resort also played a role this arrangement. I used my 14mm ‘story-telling’ lens to capture the entire story; the mood of stillness and quiet at 5:50 in the morning. |
