The Magma Collection

This special Newsletter is offering its subscribers the opportunity to see and purchase the first Limited Edition prints in the Magma Collection.

This print edition is a prelude to the publication in October, 2010, of a beautiful photographic coffee table book telling the fascinating story of British Columbia’s Volcanic Plateau, stretching from Tweedsmuir Park in the west to Wells Gray Park in the east.

There are FIVE prints in this series, all made in the volcanic Rainbow Range.

The Artist’s Vision

The volcanic rocks that I walked over these past two summers were like books. The stories they told were of their journeys toward size, colour and texture; and how they sorted and juxtaposed themselves on the slopes of the Rainbow Range.

Every rock is on the move, but not at a human pace. Freezing and thawing, rain, wind, and gravity, are moving them along. Carrying their colours with them, the rocks form a textured tapestry of streams, rivers, and ponds; always telling a story of movement.

The key to hearing and understanding this landscape, was to walk over it. I could feel the energy of these rocks as if it was coming up through the Earth, up through my feet, to a spot within me that created an emotional response. I wanted to share the story of these living rocks.

Perspective became all important. To listen closely, it became important to be visually close to the Earth; to discover and become intimate with texture, line, shape, and colour.

If these images are abstractions, they are abstracts made by the land, not the artist. Photographically they are purely documentary. Photographing beside me, Rita and Mike made very different images, each of us interpreting the landscape personally.

The images below are my response to the rocks, with their individual stories.

They are now being offered as Limited Edition Prints: The Magma Collection.

Print Media

Giclée on Canvas: Archival Limited Edition prints are printed directly on water resistant canvas and treated with a matte laminate. This process should not be confused with a canvas transfer as is done by a retail framer. The giclée on canvas process enhances the painterly nature of these images.

All canvas prints are mounted on stretch bars with hanging wire and are ready to be hung on your wall. This medium is very popular, and compared to traditionally-framed photographic prints, canvas prints are less expensive.

Photographic Paper: Pigment inks and archival papers provide the most accurate prints and display permanence when displayed under UV-protected glass. All prints are personally approved by Chris. We have chosen Photographic Premium Luster for our print sizes 16" x 24" or smaller. Larger sizes are printed as giclée’s (zhee-klay’s) on Fine Art Cotton Rag. Both processes produce the closest replication of an original artwork that is currently possible.
