Horses, their shadows, and us as we ride across the Itcha Volcano

Two weeks ago, Rita and I rode across the Itcha Mountains, an old shield volcano created between 80,000 and 3,000,000 years ago. Since that time, three ice ages have scoured away at its very foundations leaving a beautiful volcanic landscape which is ideal for hiking and trail riding.

Sometimes I have to jump off my horse to make images, but this time, as you can see from my elevated perspective, I made this photograph from my horse. It’s tricky to make good compositions while bumping along on a horse, but my horse ‘Blue’ and I get along really well. It’s the second time we have worked together out in the mountains, and she really knows the routine!
