Relatively unchanged for many millions of years, Sandhill cranes are one of the two oldest known surviving species of birds. Their rattling trumpet calls are often heard far overhead in the spring and fall as they migrate, often in flocks of thousands. Some of these shy birds stop to nest in the Cariboo-Chilcotin. Sandhill cranes mate for life and return each year to the same wetland to raise one or two young on a nest mound of bulrushes and cattails. Within hours of hatching, the young are able to forage for themselves. Within ten weeks, they are ready to fly south with their parents to maintain the ancient cycle of life.
