I remember the sense of inner excitement as I photographed the graphic simplicity of this old hay rake. Circular lines, straight lines and curved lines - with a sense of clarity and purpose they all combined to tie the form together. In contrast to the sweeping movement of the pre-dawn sky, the old hay rake lay quietly at rest. Its day had passed.
I feel a sense of history when I look at this photograph. The metal tractor seat is not one of comfort compared to today's modern tractors, but it was a simple piece of equipment which the farmer knew intimately and could quickly repair with a few twists of his spanner.
